Town of
Sullivan's Island
Fire and Rescue
Department

The Sullivan’s
Island Fire and Rescue Department was organized in 1948 to protect
the lives and property of the citizens of the Town of Sullivan’s
Island. Started as a volunteer fire department, we have currently
grown to a paid staff consisting of Chief, Training Officer, and Six
Shift Personnel. Shift personnel work a 24 hour on 48 hour off shift
schedule. The Department has Forty One (41) volunteers on its
roster, with four of the original members still active.
One of the top
priorities for the Sullivan’s Island Fire and Rescue Department is
our Fire Prevention and Education Programs. The station is visited
by well over 2500 children a year, in which they receive fire
prevention tips in a positive interaction with firefighters. The
Sullivan’s Island Fire and Rescue Department holds a fire prevention
display, on the Wednesday during Fire Prevention Week, with area
fire, police and rescue departments participating. The Sullivan’s
Island Fire and Rescue Department will allow children to tour the
station and provide parents with a fun, interesting, but learning
experience for their child birthday party, which is held in the Town
Park next to the station. In 1999 the Department received the
Richard S. Campbell Award for our Fire Prevention work.
The Department
holds three major fund raisers each year to support the Volunteer
Rescue operations. A fish fry the last Saturday of June each year,
Oyster Roast or Lobster & Bar-B-Cue Feast the first Saturday of
November, and Winter Oyster Roast the second Saturday of February.
The Volunteer Rescue Department also oversees the running of the
“Benkie-Lowe” firefighter’s boat landing at Station 9.
